Commission for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (CBGE)

 

 

 

Establishment:

The Commission for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering was established on the 9th of February, 1993, by the National Centre for Research (NCR) to help in solving economical, environmental, health and nutritional problems using modern biotechnical research techniques, with special emphasis on the applied techniques. It links research with development and planning of the country. The CBGE acts as a focal point in Sudan for the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Trieste, Italy.

Objectives:

  1. Research planning and coordination in the field of biotechnology.
  2. Development and transfer of advanced technologies for life sciences based on research programs.
  3. Provision of technical support and consultancy in biotechnology in

Sudan.

  1. Strengthening of local, regional, and international collaboration in the biotechnology field.
  2. Capacity building and training of personnel in Biotechnology.

Departments:

  1. 1.           Department of Microbial Biotechnology:

The department of microbiology is one of the oldest departments CBGE. The main objectives of this department was harnessing the potential of various microbial cells to conduct researches to solve economical, environmental, health and nutritional problems majoring  in the use of agricultural and industrial residues for the production of solvents such as alcohol for industrial purposes. Also there are research projects in the production of organic acids, vitamins, Industrial enzymes, industrial yeast, antibiotics etc and production of single-cell protein as food for humans and animals

Objectives: 

  1. Conduction of research programs in the area of Microbial Biotechnology.
  2. Provision of technical support and consultancy in microbial biotechnology area.
  3. Production of microbial bioactive secondary metabolites.
    1. Collection and preservation of microbial genetic resources as basement for the establishment of Microbial Bank which is the main objective of this department.
    2. 2.         Department of Plant Cell and Tissue Culture:

The department of tissue culture and plant cells is one of the sections of biotechnology and genetic engineering which was established with the beginning of the establishment of CBGE. The department uses biotechnology technique that propagates some parts of the plants in controlled environment such as a stem tip, node, root, meristem, protoplast, embryo, or even a seed by placing them in a sterile, (usually gel-based) nutrient medium where it multiplies.

Objectives:

  1. Developing of in vitro regeneration protocols for economically important plants covering forest trees, horticulture and floriculture crops for producing large quantities of planting material with desired characteristics.
  2. Production of valuable secondary metabolites through callus or root suspension culture.
  3. Micropropagation of ornamental, forests and endangered trees.
  4. Crop improvement through enhance tolerant to drought, salinity, etc
  5. 3.         Department of Molecular Biology:

The department of Molecular Biology is one of the five basic departments of CBGE. Since its establishment, the department has been conducting research and training of scientists in the field of molecular biology. The department growth in recent years reflects the revolution in biology that benefits new genome approaches.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of the department are:

To perform research in molecular biology, educate and train graduate and undergraduate students in the running research projects, The department carries research projects in molecular biology including genetic characterization of plants, microorganisms and the application of modern techniques in this issue. And the department together with the other basic science departments at the Commission carries inter-related research.

  1. 4.     Department of Biochemistry:

The department of Biochemistry was initiated in 2005. The department is mainly concerned with Phytochemical analysis and biological screening of traditionally used Sudanese medicinal plants in different forms. Research in the department is performed in collaboration with different national and international universities and research institutes. These institutes include University of Khartoum (Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Pharmacy), University of Science and Technology (Faculty of Pharmacy), University of Bonn and International University of Bremen (Germany), National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, Suwon (South Korea).

Objectives:

  1. Biologically guided fractionation and isolation of bioactive metabolites from different sources including plants, soil and marine born microbes.
  2. Biological screening techniques e.g. antimicrobial activity, anti-parasitic activity, antioxidant, antidiabetic and different other assays to prove claimed pharmacological merits.
  3. Application of new technologies e.g. Tandem Mass Spectrometry and other hyphenated techniques to identify potentially new drug molecules residing in those bioactive extracts.
  4. Chemical finger printing of the plants studied.
  5. Applying tissue culture techniques with the aim of studying and increasing the production of secondary metabolites of the plants studied.
  6. 5.         Department of Medical Biotechnology:

Medical Biotechnology Department is part of CBGE. It has been established in September 2007. Research activity in the department is directed towards increased understanding of important medical and biotechnological problems, so as to provide improved diagnostic or therapeutic solutions.

Objectives:

Development, application and establishment of new technologies to study a group of prevalent and infectious diseases in Sudan.

v  Identification of new biomarkers for the diagnosis of diseases

v  Development of new drugs and medical treatments

Community services:

CBGE executes training in order to strengthen national capacities in biotechnology; the commission allows several graduate students interested in training under the running projects to use its facilities. During the previous years, several B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. Students benefited from the facilities and the laboratories of the commission to pursue their studies, and that was done in collaboration with different universities in Sudan. Furthermore, all the departments of the Commission organize various training courses on yearly basis for capacity building of all who are interested in the field.

Cooperation and Partnership:

The Commission is keen in strengthening cooperation and partnerships with national and international institutions.  Some of the research projects are executed with collaboration and partnerships with institutes inside and outside Sudan.  Besides, the Commission cooperates with all universities in Sudan by training graduate students under the running projects. Since its establishment, the Commission was involved in B.Sc. dissertation projects, M.Sc. and Ph.D. research projects in collaboration with different universities such as University of Khartoum, University of Sudan for Science & Technology, Omdurman Islamic University and University of Juba.

Publications:

The Commission publishes yearly several publications in national and international refereed Journals in different biotechnology related disciplines.
